Launching the AIEI Legal Committee: Building Ethics, Standards & Dialogue on AI and Law

As artificial intelligence reshapes everything from business to public policy, the legal profession faces pressing new questions. How should AI be regulated? What ethical and legal standards should guide its development? And how do we ensure that AI tools uphold – rather than undermine – the rule of law?
To help answer these questions, we’re proud to announce the formation of the Legal Committee of the AI Ethics and Integrity International Association (AIEI). Formally adopted by the AIEI, the Legal Committee is a permanent thematic body tasked with supporting the Association’s mission through legal analysis, policy expertise, and strategic guidance.
A Platform for Legal and Ethical Leadership
The Legal Committee will serve as a hub for collaboration between lawyers, legal scholars, policymakers, and technologists working at the intersection of law, ethics, and AI. Its scope of work includes five core areas:
1. Ethical and Regulatory Standards. The Committee will support the development and review of ethical and legal standards for responsible AI – contributing to international principles, declarations, and cross-border initiatives. It will engage legal scholars, regulatory bodies, and civil society in shaping fair, future-oriented frameworks.
2. Monitoring Legal Developments. By tracking legislative and regulatory changes in AI governance across jurisdictions, the Committee will provide regular legal updates and risk analysis for the AIEI network.
3. Legal Advisory and Opinion Papers. The Committee may produce legal opinions, compliance notes, or policy briefs on request. It will contribute to public consultations, amicus briefs, and internal governance questions related to law and ethics.
4. AI in Legal Practice. With AI already transforming legal workflows, the Committee will explore its implications for professional responsibility, LegalTech ethics, and standards for AI use in the legal sector – working with bar associations, law societies, and technology providers.
5. Education and Knowledge Sharing. The Committee will support legal education and awareness by organizing seminars, webinars, and producing legal content for judges, lawyers, and policymakers. It will also contribute to AIEI’s own publications and events.
